Julius nodded as the man walked away and looked back at the robed man, who had now spotted him and begun pushing aggressively through the crowd. By the time he reached the place where Julius had been, he was nowhere to be found.
Sitting on a rooftop nearby, Julius paused to think. He had hoped for the philosopher to choose knowledge over innocence, but forced himself to respect his decision, however ironic it may have seemed to him. Julius gracefully maneuvered his way to the edge of the building and looked out over the far square. The crowd still murmured over the explosion, but the man in black had given up and started toward the tavern that Julius had recently exited. Far to the north he spotted the philosopher walking amiably down the street. Julius paused for a brief moment to observe him, then looked down at the book he had been given.
"It is not time then," he said aloud from beneath his shadowed hood, "So be it."
He then jumped off the side of the building into the alley and disappeared in a flash of rippling blue.
